  • Development of Gilgit-Baltistan top priority of government: PM

    The Prime Minister announced Rs 2 billion for improvement of administration and financial health of the Gilgit-Baltistan Government

    Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf has said that development of Gilgit-Baltistan is top priority of the Government and it would turn it into a model of development with the cooperation of GB Government and people.
    He was addressing joint session of the Gilgit-Baltistan Council and Legislative Assembly in Gilgit on Friday evening.

    The Prime Minister announced two billion rupees for improvement of administration and financial health of the Gilgit-Baltistan Government.

    The Prime Minister said Gilgit-Baltistan is rich in natural resources which needed to be exploited fully to improve standard of living of the people of the region.

    Raja Pervez Ashraf said the PPP always strived for social‚ political and economic empowerment of people of Gilgit-Baltistan. Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto introduced administrative and political reforms and the present democratic Government of the PPP gave identity to the region. He said Gilgit-Baltistan Empower and Self-Rule Order introduced in September 2009 has led to devolution of powers from Islamabad to Gilgit-Baltistan.
    He expressed satisfaction that the Legislative Assembly has made progress towards establishment of Provincial Public Service Commission‚ Service Tribunal and Revenue Board.

    The Prime Minister expressed the confidence that the area can prosper if the GB Government is able to improve governance and develop tourism.

    He said measures are being taken to make journey on the vital Karakoram Highway safe. For this purpose‚ personnel of Frontier Constabulary‚ GB Scouts and Police have been deployed and KPK Government asked to deploy police personnel as well.

    Raja Pervez Ashraf lauded the role of Parliamentary Peace Committee‚ Masjid Boards and Mohalla Peace Committees in maintenance of law and order.

    The Prime Minister gave instructions to PIA to increase frequency of flights for Gilgit-Baltistan.

    The Prime Minister said he talked to the Chinese Premier during his last visit in connection with speedy rehabilitation and up-gradation of KKH portions.

    Raja Pervez Ashraf said it was satisfying that the democratic government is nearing completion of its tenure and moving towards general elections. Credit goes to the Government for introducing reforms of far-reaching importance in various fields including constitutional amendments‚ empowerment to people of Balochistan and GB and identity to people of KPK.
