At least two people were killed and one injured when a blast rocked the Gulshan-e-Iqbal area of Karachi, injuring a child on Wednesday.

According to sources, the explosion occurred in Haji Lemo Goth in Gulshan-e-Iqbal. Among injured was a small child who soon afterwards lost his life while undergoing treatment.

Following the explosion, the Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) was summoned to the scene, and the area was cordoned off.

According to the police, the injured have been shifted to a private hospital, while the Crime Scene Investigation Unit of the Karachi police were also called on the scene,

The blast in Karachi adds to a series of violent events across Pakistan in the lead-up to the general elections on Thursday (tomorrow). In South Waziristan, two political workers were targeted in a hand grenade attack. Additionally, separate blasts in Balochistan claimed the lives of at least 28 individuals, with election candidates among the targets.

According to the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) East Syed Irfan Ali Bahadur, the cause of the explosion was a hand grenade throw by a 17-year-old boy, residing in the same area and son of a police officer.

SSP Bahadur added that the purpose and target of the hand grenade is still under investigation. “The police have detained the boy’s brother while his house is being searched”, he said.
