    US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, in a statement, has welcomed Afghan President Ashraf Ghani's offer to extend the ceasefire and begin peace talks. He said his country is prepared to support, facilitate and participate in these discussions.

    Mike Pompeo noted that the people of Afghanistan would benefit from the end of bloodshed. He said we have seen the positive reaction from Afghans on the extension of ceasefire. He said the Afghan leaders can talk together and resolve their differences.

    He said the US is ready to work with the Afghan government, the Taliban and the people of Afghanistan to reach a peace agreement and political settlement that brings an end to war in the country.

    Meanwhile, United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan has commended government of Afghanistan and Taliban for extension of ceasefire for an end to the conflict.

    In a statement, UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan Tadamichi Yamamoto said extension in ceasefire provides an opportunity for initiating a negotiated solution to the conflict.

    Yamamoto said United Nations continues to stand with an Afghan-led and Afghan-owned peace process that will end the war.
