Renowned Indian cricketer Virat Kohli has unveiled a unique connection with Serbian tennis maestro Novak Djokovic, shedding light on their unexpected virtual friendship that transcends the boundaries of their respective sports.

In a candid revelation, Kohli disclosed the origins of their correspondence in a video released by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The cricket icon shared that the virtual friendship commenced when he spontaneously messaged Djokovic, only to discover that the tennis legend had initiated contact even before he did.

"I got in touch with Djokovic very organically. I was just looking at his Instagram profile once and just happened to press the ‘message’ button. I thought I would say 'Hello’ [to him]. However, I saw a message from him on my DM already. I [had] never opened it myself [before]," Kohli explained, revealing the serendipitous beginning of their digital camaraderie.

Expressing mutual admiration and respect, Kohli recounted their exchange of messages, with the cricketer offering congratulations on Djokovic's remarkable achievements.

The 2023 ODI World Cup player of the tournament emphasised the significance of connecting with global athletes excelling at the highest level, sending out an inspiring message to the next generation.

"There has been mutual admiration and respect. It is nice to connect with global athletes who are excelling at a high level. Collectively, it is sending out a message of inspiration to the next generation in a way," Kohli remarked.

Highlighting Djokovic's appreciation for Kohli's achievements, the cricketer mentioned receiving a personal message from the tennis ace on his 50th ODI century. Kohli expressed a desire to meet Djokovic in person, sharing a casual moment over a cup of coffee when their paths cross, either in India or during Kohli's travels.

Novak Djokovic, reciprocating the sentiment, previously revealed their ongoing text messaging friendship on Sony Sports Network. Despite not having met in person, Djokovic expressed his admiration for Kohli's career and achievements, adding a touch of humor as he mentioned his quest to improve his cricket skills before visiting India.
