A report by a joint investigation team (JIT) probing the alleged encounter in Sahiwal which killed four people including three members of a family was presented to Prime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday.

The prime minister was presented the report during a parliamentary report and informed about the measures taken by the Punjab government in the light of the JIT report, sources said.

On January 19, four people including three members of a family were killed in an alleged encounter in Sahiwal.

Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) personnel said they had killed a local commander of militant organisation Daesh and three others in the operation.

Eyewitnesses, however, disputed the claim and said the people in the car did not fire at officials, nor were any explosives recovered from the vehicle.

The dead included a man, his wife and their teenage daughter.

Moreover, the report stated, three officials of the CTD including the head have been transferred while two officers have been suspended, while those involved in the killings would be tried by an anti-terrorism court.

The report which was submitted to Punjab chief minister on Tuesday mentioned negligence on part of the CTD officials.

It added that there was no link between the Khalil family killed in the incident and terrorism.

Sources further said, the premier has sought recommendations for Punjab police and to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.

The prime minister before departing for Qatar on Monday had vowed to bring reforms in Punjab police after the Sahiwal incident.

The premier, in a Twitter post, wrote that he would not only ensure the guilty are given exemplary punishment but also “review the entire structure of Punjab police and start process of reforming it.”

“The grief and anger of the people of Pakistan on Sahiwal incident is understandable & justified.

I assure the nation that when I return from Qatar not only will the guilty be given exemplary punishment but I will review the entire structure of Punjab police and start process of reforming it,” he tweeted.
