Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has emphasized that enhancing exports should be made the foundation of Pakistan's economic growth.
Chairing a review meeting in Islamabad on improving the country’s exports, he said in addition to traditional sectors, more sectors should also be prepared to export to international markets.
He said the maximum possible number of sectors and industries should be brought into export activities to diversify trade.
Shehbaz Sharif said effective measures should be taken to bring the quality of Pakistani products in line with international standards, strengthen quality assurance systems and ensure full compliance with international standards and regulations. He said special attention should be given to value addition in exports so that both the value and competitiveness of Pakistani products in global markets can be enhanced.
The Prime Minister directed that modern technology, research and innovation be promoted in export-oriented industries. He said the country’s economy should fully benefit from digitalization and modern technology in order to align it with contemporary requirements.
Shehbaz Sharif directed to remove administrative and business-related obstacles faced by exporters and the export process should be made easier, faster and more transparent.
The meeting was briefed on progress regarding the implementation of the approved strategic roadmap for promoting exports. Various proposals regarding access to new international markets, diversification of export sectors, improvement in product quality and business facilitation were also reviewed.
It was informed that steps are being taken to conclude free trade agreements and preferential trade agreements with several friendly countries in order to increase the access of Pakistani products to global markets.
The meeting was informed that measures are being taken to include Pakistani horticultural products in the country’s exports.
It was informed that Pakistani exporters are being encouraged to participate in international hospitals’ tenders and procurement processes to increase exports of Pakistani surgical and medical equipment.
