Pakistan has assumed the presidency of the United Nations Conference on Disarmament (CD), with Pakistani Ambassador Tahir Hussain Andrabi presiding over the conference's meetings in Geneva.

According to a spokesperson for Pakistan's Foreign Office, Pakistan will complete the conference's annual proceedings as the final presidency of the 2026 session.

During its presidency, Pakistan will oversee discussions on the conference's annual report as well as negotiations on the relevant resolution to be presented before the UN General Assembly's First Committee.

The Foreign Office said Ambassador Andrabi has begun consultations in his capacity as president of the Conference on Disarmament. He chaired a meeting of the 2026 presidents of the conference and held consultations with representatives of regional groups.

The Conference on Disarmament is the world's only multilateral forum dedicated to negotiating disarmament and arms-control agreements. It has 65 member states, including countries that possess nuclear weapons.

Its agenda includes preventing an arms race and nuclear war. The conference and its predecessor bodies have also played a role in negotiations on major international agreements, including the Biological Weapons Convention and Chemical Weapons Convention.

The Foreign Office spokesperson said Pakistan's presidency reflects the international community's confidence in the country's diplomatic leadership.

The presidency will provide Pakistan with an opportunity to play a central role in discussions on arms control and disarmament, as well as broader debates concerning international peace and security.
