The leaders of the two Senate standing committees on the tragic Sahiwal encounter met face-to-face on Friday.

Rehman Malik, the chairperson of the Senate Standing Committee on Interior, said there cannot be a debate until the investigative report is completed.

Barrister Javed Abbasi responded that under his leadership, the Senate Standing Committee on Law and Justice had already rejected the setting up of a joint investigation team (JIT) but warned that attempts were being made to suppress the matter.

Briefing the Senate Standing Committee on Interior, Fazeel Asghar, the secretary of the interior for Punjab, said Zeeshan was definitely a terrorist, that there was too much luggage in the car's rear side, and that people sitting inside could not be seen clearly.

Amjad Saleemi, the inspector-general of police (IGP) for Punjab, echoed Committee chairperson Malik's comments, saying it was inadvisable to have a debate before the JIT released its report.

"We will bring the investigative report into public light," he said.

However, heated words were exchanged during the Committee meeting between IG Punjab Saleemi and Senator Kulsoom Parveen, with the latter threatening to file a privilege motion against the former.
