Islamabad High Court sentenced Deputy Commissioner Islamabad Irfan Memon to six months in jail for misconduct and contempt on Friday.

Justice Babar Sattar announced the verdict which had been reserved on February 21.

The DC is accused of ordering the arrest of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader Shaheryar Afridi under MPO in contravention of court orders.

Islamabad’s SSP operations has been sentenced to four months in jail while SHO Margalla has been sentenced to two months in jail.

However, the court also suspended the jail sentences for 30 days on account of the small duration of the punishment.

The DC had ordered Afridi’s arrest after the violent protests of May 9 under section (3) of the Maintainance of Public Order.

Islamabad High Court had ordered the release of Shehryar Afridi, who was being held under the MPO. However, the DC had immediately reordered his arrest under the MPO citing he had received a ‘source report’.

The court had ruled that the rearrest amounted to ‘belittling’ court orders. Justice Sattar had also said that the arrest orders under MP were synchronised to keep people in jail even after court ordered their release.
