    Justice Mussarat Hilali of the Peshawar High Court took oath as a judge of the supreme court in the country on Friday. Justice Hilali is now the 16th judge and second female judge in the Supreme Court.

    Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial administered the oath to Justice Hilali in a special ceremony held in the Supreme Court on Friday morning.

    Justice Hilali is now the 16th judge and second female judge in the Supreme Court.

    Her appointment had first been approved by the Judicial Commission of Pakistan and then confirmed by a parliamentary committee.

    In April this year, Justice Hilali had taken oath as the acting chief justice of the Peshawar High Court. She was the first female to serve in that position.

    Justice Musarrat Hilali was born in 1961 and began her career as a lawyer after graduating from Khyber Law College in 1983.

    By 1988 she had received a license to practice in the Peshawar High Court and in 2006, she received a license to practice in the Supreme Court as well.

    She also served as the first female Additional Advocate General of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in 2001 and as the province’s first female ombudsman. She has also served as the chairperson of the environment protection tribunal.

    She was appointed to the Peshawar High Court as an additional judge in 2013 and was made permanent 2014.
