President Mamnoon Hussain has said that the country’s foundation is being slowly eroded by the menace of corruption.

“Corruption is eroding the foundation of the country. Civil servants should do their best to ensure corruption-free governance,” he said during a meeting with a delegation of recently-promoted grade-22 officers at the Presidency on Thursday.

According to the president’s spokesman, Mr Hussain urged the civil servants to expeditiously redress the problems being faced by the people and efficiently perform their duties.

In a separate meeting with the visiting Italian Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Paolo Gentiloni, President Hussain reiterated Pakistan’s resolve to eliminate the scourge of terrorism.

The Italian minister appreciated Pakistan’s efforts in the fight against terrorism and stressed the need to jointly combat the common challenge.

He said that there was a need to increase the volume of trade between the two countries to fully realise the potential in the energy, agriculture, food processing and automotive sectors.
