Sartaj Aziz, chairperson of the Committee on FATA Reforms, said Friday that two main demands regarding the FATA Reforms Committee (FRC) brought up in a meeting of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa cabinet have already been accepted.
On March 22, in a meeting chaired by KP Chief Minister Pervez Khattak, the provincial cabinet had proposed to give the FRC the status of a Cabinet Implementation Committee and integrate it in the Directorate of Transition and Reforms with the provincial government to properly coordinate and monitor the reforms process in the tribal belt.
It had also suggested that the prime minister head the FRC and hold a quarterly meeting to review the pace of the FATA reforms.
The federal cabinet had approved on March 2 recommendations put forth by the six-member FATA reforms committee.
The cabinet had reconstituted the FRC into a cabinet-level implementation committee which included the KP chief minister, chief secretary and the commander of the Army's XI Corps.
The newly-constituted implementation committee will hold its first meeting in Peshawar soon and will take into account the views and proposals put forth by the KP government in formulating an implementation plan for the reforms approved by the federal cabinet.
