Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader and senator Aitzaz Ahsan said that opposition parties extended unconditional support to the democracy, the government and prime minister’s cabinet despite ‘immense difficulties’.

Addressing a joint session of the parliament, the PPP leader said he received a lot of messages from the party workers who complained as to why the party is supporting Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government.

We know that if the government passes this critical phase, I am afraid that the government and its ministers would continue their arrogant behavior.

Criticising the government, Aitzaz said Dr. Tahirul Qadri since June 17 was requesting the police to get FIR registered into Model Town tragedy that left over a dozen Minhajul Quran (MuQ) workers dead, but the rulers did not pay heed.

“If you wanted to remove barriers outside the MuQ secretariat, then tell me under which law you blocked roads in Lahore and now blocking entire Islamabad with containers,” the PPP leader asked.

He said it is witnessed that the government needed to change IG and DIGs repeatedly. He asked the government to lead from the front and give police higher officials’ instructions in writing to avoid unnecessary changes.

Slamming police attack on media persons in Islamabad, Aitzaz said it a ‘very shameful’ act as part of the police.

Backing Imran Khan’s claims, Aitzaz said allegations regarding rigging in general elections are valid, adding that the May 11, 2013 polls were massively rigged.

He said that Nawaz Sharif and his government are secure as whole parliament is supporting them. “No one can force you (Nawaz Sharif) to resign as we all are backing the government.”

“We hold hands of yours and your government….and the opposition parties have made a history through their unprecedented unity,” the senator added.

He said Imran Khan repeatedly gave example of 10 Downing Street, asking him as to “where is that 10 Downing Street where baton and slingshots-wielding protesters can stage demonstration.”

He said his party’s slain leader Benazir Bhutto was the one who always led from the front unlike “these leaders” who use women and children as their shield against baton-charge and teargas shelling.

“In order to become a leader like Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, these leaders need to come out of their containers,” said the veteran politician.
