NEW YORK: A portrait of human rights campaigner Malala Yousafzai sold for $82,000 at auction on Wednesday to raise money for her charity, the Malala Fund.

The humanitarian, known for her challenge to the Pakistani Taliban in defense of women's rights, promised all proceeds from the sale would be directed by her charity, which supports the fight for girls' right to education, to a new fund set up in response to the crisis in Nigeria and the kidnapping of some 200 girls from a local school last month.

The painting by British artist Jonathan Yeo just beat the pre-auction estimate of $60,000-80,000 when the hammer fell during the day sale of Christie's Post -War and Contemporary Art.

The undisclosed bidder called in over the phone with the winning price. Including fees and commission, the final amount raised for charity was $102,500.
