  • Chinese company ‘awarded $382m contract to reconstruct Lahore airport’

A Chinese company has won a 41-billion ruble ($382 million) contract to engineer, procure, and reconstruct the Allama Iqbal International Airport in Lahore, the Chinese state-owned People’s Daily newspaper reported Tuesday.

The Pakistani government awarded the contract to China Construction Third Engineering Bureau which has already worked on different major projects in the country: Karachi-Lahore Expressway between Sukker and Multan, Arfa Software Technology Park, and The Centaurus Hotel.

“It is the largest project that the Third Engineering Bureau has undertaken overseas, marking another important achievement in Belt and Road construction,” the newspaper said in its report.

The AIIP will become Pakistan’s largest airport after reconstruction, and local infrastructure will be improved too.

The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is the flagship programme of OBOR. The construction of an international airport in Gwadar is also part of CPEC.
