  • Man arrested at LAX trying to flee after being accused of sexually assaulting 16-year-old girl

A 20-year-old man was arrested in Los Angeles last week while allegedly attempting to flee to China after being accused of sexual assault and blackmailing.

Police in the city of Irvine began investigating Gaoyang “Gary” Li in January after a 16-year-old girl came forward with appalling allegations against him. The girl told police that she had met Li through the Chinese dating app Tantan and had later agreed to meet him in person.

At their meeting, the girl says that Li forced her to perform oral sex on him and filmed the act. Later, he sent her messages, threatening to forward the video to her friends and family if he didn’t pay her money.

Police first arrested Li on February 6th on the campus of UC Irvine. However, he was released two days later as no formal charges were filed against him.

Afterward, police continued to monitor Li and he was arrested again at the Los Angeles International Airport on February 22nd, believed to have been trying to flee to China.

Li has been charged with three felonies: one count of oral copulation of a person under 18 and two counts of delivery of a threatening letter with intent to extort. He is being held on $1 million bail.
