Tech-savvy Dubai police on Wednesday have unveiled a hoverbike capable of flying five metres (16 feet) above the ground

The high-tech crime-fighting vehicle was shown off to onlookers at a recent tech convention, alongside a prototype robotic car.

The battery-powered flying bike, co-developed with Russian drone manufacturer Hoversurf is being eyed for use in responding to emergency situations, said a Dubai police officer.

It can fly five metres above the surface and carry a policeman during emergency situations and heavy traffic.

The hoverbike can fly for up to 25 minutes, hit speeds of up to 70 kph (43mph) and carry up to 300kg (47 stone) of weight.

Dubai police said it could enable police officers to get to crime scenes that would otherwise be hard to reach with a car or a motorbike because of traffic jams.
