The Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered the anti-encroachment drive should continue in the metropolis.
A three-member bench comprising Justice Faisal Arab and Justice Umar Ata Bandial were hearing a case regarding illegal encroachments in the city at SC’s Karachi registry.
During the hearing, advocate general Sindh told the court, they were taking help from experts to reinstate the city to its original state.
“We took experts from opinions in a conference held on January 1. If we took action without consulting, then a human tragedy can occur.
Therefore we request the court to give us an extension for planning and action.”
The Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) also requested the court for an additional eight weeks for the operation.
Justice Musheer Alam remarked, it is our dream that Karachi is restored to its natural state. “Restaurants and small businesses have sprung up on small plots.
There is no place to walk in the streets. It is the SBCS’s job to ensure to restore the city to its original state but it has failed to do so.”
The court then ordered the anti-encroachment drive to continue in the city and appointed chief secretary Sindh to supervise the operation. It also ordered the removal of rubble from the city.
The court also ordered the chief secretary to ensure cooperation between the relevant departments.
