Deputy Inspector General of Mardan, Alam Khan Shinwari has announced on Thursday that Imran, slain Mashal Khan’s classmate who opened fatal fire was held by cops and he has confessed to the crime.
Mardan DIG addressed a press conference today and said that late Khan was shot twice and according to eye-witnesses, Imran fired the bullets.
Shinwari offered a clarification over police’s alleged negligence in the issue. He explained that police were told that Mashal Khan was out of campus which was why they went to the administration block after rescuing a professor and one of his mates.
The DIG claimed that even Mashal Khan confirmed his absence in the campus after he was telephoned by the cops.
He asserted that the police had reached the crime site within 13 minutes of the tragic incident.
The police official further told that a total number of 44 persons were held in the case including employees of the university. The police presented the accused, Imran before the media following the press conference.
Mashal Khan was lynched by a charged mob earlier this month in hostel of Abdul Wali Khan University in Mardan for allegedly reserving viewpoints contradictory to those embraced by conservative Pakistani society.
Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pervez Khattak ordered a probe in the issue and vowed to set an example out of the case. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif issued a condemning statement, with a delay attracting flak from the civil society.
