As the counting of votes in the NA-45 Kurram by-elections continues, unofficial and preliminary results show that PTI Chairman Imran Khan is leading with 16,441 votes.
A tough contest was expected between Imran Khan and JUI-F's Jamil Khan, who is backed by the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM).
According to the unofficial final results from 113 out of 143 polling stations of NA 45, Imran Khan is leading with 16,441 votes, while Jamil Khan stands second with 9,231 votes.
Polling started at 8am and continued till 5pm without any break.
Aside from Imran Khan and Jamil Khan, 14 other candidates contested the elections.
There are 198,618 registered voters — 111,349 men and 87,269 women — in the constituency, according to the spokesman of the election commission.
District Police Officer (DPO) Kurram, Arbab Shafiullah said that security arrangements had been completed for by-elections in NA-45 and transportation of election material had been started.
He said that 2,100 policemen had been deputed on polling duty.
The DPO has called on political leaders and workers to abide by rules and cooperate with police to maintain peace during the election today.
