The Supreme Court of Pakistan (SCP) on Tuesday resumed hearing of three petitions on the video scandal involving former accountability court judge Arshad Malik who had convicted former premier Nawaz Sharif in the Al-Azizia reference and acquitted him in the Flagship Investments reference.

A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Asif Saeed Khosa presided over the hearing of the petitions seeking a directive from the apex court for the constitution of an inquiry committee or a judicial commission to probe the matter.

A three-judge Apex Court bench headed by Chief Justice Asif Saeed Khosa took up the video scandal case that alleges Arshad Malik of ruling against former prime minister Nawaz Sharif “under external pressure”.

Attorney General Anwer Mansoor Khan is presenting his arguments before the judges’ panel.

In the previous hearing, Supreme Court took suggestions of Attorney General regarding constitution of a probe commission into the controversy.

Chief Justice Asif Khosa said: “There’s no doubt that what the judge [in the leaked video] said were extraordinary statements. If the Supreme court gives its judgement then the case under Accountability court will definitely get affected”.

He asserted that the case did not focus on the authenticity of leaked video, but on the misconduct of judge Arshad Malik.

Chief Justice affirmed that judiciary neither gets influenced by anyone nor takes the suggestion of any person while taking actions.

The bench subsequently directed the FIA to complete its probe in the matter within three weeks. The attorney general was asked by the court to ensure the inquiry is completed in a timely manner.

The hearing of the petitions was adjourned for three weeks.
