    A special court in Gujranwala on Saturday awarded 27-year jail sentence and fined Rs190000 to accused Abid in Ahsan Iqbal attack case.

    The court also directed accused to pay a fine of Rs60000 to former interior minister whereas an additional three-year jail sentence was awarded over possession of illegal weapons.

    The court also acquitted four other accused Shahid, Kashif, Azeem and Sabeel on benefit of doubt.

    On May 6, Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) leader and former interior minister Ahsan Iqbal sustained bullets injuries on right shoulder in a failed assassination attempt. Gunman shot bullets at Ahsan Iqbal during the corner meeting in Qasba Kanjrod area of the Narowal.

    District Police Officer (DPO) Imran Kishwar stated that the attacker used a 30-bore pistol to fire at Ahsan Iqbal from a distance of around 20 yards.

    Ahsan Iqbal was immediately shifted to DHQ hospital where he received initial treatment. Ahsan Iqbal was shifted to Lahore’s Services Hospital for further treatment.

    The attacker was identified as 21-year-old Abid Hussain who was immediately nabbed by the security personnel present on the occasion. For further interrogation, the attacker has been shifted to undisclosed location. Hussain hails from a local village.
