The more than a year-long wrangling between Sindh government and civil society over the removal of Inspector General of Police A.D. Khowaja is all but over as a meeting of the federal cabinet has approved the appointment of Sardar Abdul Majeed Dasti as the new Sindh police chief.

The posting of new IG for Sindh was on the agenda of today's cabinet meeting, which is currently underway with Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi in the chair.

A minister present in the meeting told that the cabinet has approved the appointment of Dasti, a grade-22 police officer, as IG Sindh to replace the incumbent IG Khowaja.

The Sindh government had gone out on a limb to replace IG Khowaja with a police chief of its own liking.

Khowaja’s differences with bigwigs of Sindh's ruling party, the PPP, on issues relating to the removal/posting of police officials before by-elections in some constituencies, his stance on a businessman said to be a close associate of PPP leader Asif Zardari and recruitment in the police department are no secret.
