The Foreign Office on Wednesday said Pakistan enjoys strong credentials in the international community as the country has been elected in various bodies of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) during the 39th Session of the General Conference held in Paris.

In the weekly press briefing by FO spokesperson Mohammad Faisal said Pakistan getting elected for UNESCO bodies is a reflection of the confidence of the international community in country’s constructive leadership role within United Nations.

He informed the media that Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi will visit Russia to participate in the 16th Meeting of the Council of the Heads of Government (CHG) of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). The PM was invited by Prime Minister of the Russian Federation DA Medvedev.

On the other hand, Faisal said, Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif is leading the Pakistani delegation in the 7th Ministerial Conference of Heart of Asia –Istanbul Process which is being held in Baku, Azerbaijan.

The FO spokesperson further said that the foreign minister has condemned in the strongest possible terms the repeated arrests and incarceration of the top Kashmiri leaders, who have remained the vanguard of the struggle for the realisation of the legitimate right to self-determination.

“The attack on Kashmiri political detainees, including Syed Shahid Yusuf, Ahtisham, Shazad Ahmed and over a dozen other political prisoners was carried out by the jail administration and Tamil Nadu Police deputed in India’s infamous Tihar jail Dehli,” the FO said.

“The incident is completely unjustifiable, extremely serious,” he added.

Faisal also went on to condemn the latest terrorist attack against innocent worshippers at Al Rawdah mosque in the North Sinai region of Egypt, resulting in 305 reported deaths.

“The people of Pakistan are deeply grieved at this senseless and barbaric act and stand in solidarity with their Egyptian brethren in this moment of anguish and tragedy,” he said.
