  • Stephen Chow confirms that Kung Fu Hustle 2 is coming!

Fans of movies and martial arts, rejoice! As actor-director Stephen Chow has officially confirmed that there will be a sequel of sorts to his cult classic, Kung Fu Hustle.

A charming mix of zany characters, slapstick comedy, and stunning action scenes, that film was released back in 2004, earning $102 million at the global box office and near universal praise from critics (90% on Rotten Tomatoes). Chow not only directed, co-wrote, and co-produced the movie, but starred in it as well.

While rumors had been swirling around that a sequel to the beloved flick was in the works, Chow had yet to address the issue until this past Sunday at a promotional event in Guangzhou for his latest film, The New King of Comedy.

Footage from that event shows one fan asking Chow if the rumors about Kung Fu Hustle 2 are actually true.

”Uh… yes. But it’s not exactly Kung Fu Hustle 2, though it is the same kind of story,” Chow replied before going on to explain that the film would take place in modern times and be set in a foreign country while still keeping with the same spirit as the original movie.

Chow also waived off questions about whether he would star in the film, implying that he is now too old for the work, though he did leave the possibility open for a cameo appearance.

Since the release of Kung Fu Hustle, Chow has gone on to direct a number of other blockbusters including The Mermaid which hit theaters in 2016 and soon became the highest grossing film ever in China, though it has since moved down to fourth.

Chow is currently putting the finishing touches on a much-anticipated sequel to The Mermaid which is planned for release this summer. He says he will then move on to directing Kung Fu Hustle 2.
