    Good universities are struggling to recruit the best students as some schools only allow Russell Group institutions to speak to their pupils, a higher education chief has complained.

    Headteachers are so obsessed with the prestige of the Russell Group they push universities in the group "mercilessly hard" to their students, according to Professor Katie Normington, senior vice principal of Royal Holloway, University of London.

    The Russell Group, which includes Oxford, Cambridge, Bristol and Durham, is a self-selected group of 24 of the country’s leading research universities.
