Finance Minister Asad Umar on Wednesday felicitated Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company (SECMC) a joint venture between the Sindh government and Engro Corporation on trial run of Pakistan’s first power station based on Thar coal for electricity generation.

“Congratulations to @SECMC_Thar and @EngroCorp on the beginning of the trial power generation of the 330 mw unit,” he tweeted. “Finally the huge energy reserves of thar are being used for energy security of the country.”

The first unit of 330MW of the combined 660MW power plant, located in Thar Block II, was connected to the national grid on Monday as it started power generation.

The second unit will be connected in April, according to the Engro Powergen Thar Private Ltd (EPTL) chief executive officer.

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah had announced on Monday night that the power unit has started generating power from the world’s seventh largest coal reserves.
