US President Donald Trump has warned “twisted” North Korea that the international community will tolerate what he called the country’s "nuclear blackmail," pledging to shore up support for “maximum pressure” against Pyongyang.

Trump made the remarks on Wednesday, a day after he wrapped a 12-day trip to Asia aimed at rallying pressure against the North’s nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs.

"I made clear that we will not allow this twisted dictatorship to hold the world hostage to nuclear blackmail," Trump said in a televised speech, referring to his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing.

During Trump’s visit, the two leaders pledged to implement United Nations Security Council resolutions against Pyongyang and to use his country’s economic influence over North Korea in order to denuclearize it.

"President Xi recognizes that a nuclear North Korea is a grave threat to China, and we agreed that we would not accept a so-called ‘freeze for freeze’ agreement like those that have consistently failed in the past. We made that time is running out and we made it clear, and all options remain on the table," Trump said.

Speaking at the White House, Trump said his Asian trip was a "tremendous success."

"America's renewed confidence and standing in the world has never been stronger than it is right now," he said.

Trump had formerly pressed President Xi to use influence on Pyongyang to force it to abandon its nuclear program. But China has said that statements of its outsize influence on North Korea are inaccurate.

Beijing remains Pyongyang’s closest and largest commercial partner, purchasing some 83 percent of the North’s exports and selling 85 percent of the goods imported by the peninsular country.

North Korea sentences Trump to death

Earlier on Wednesday, North Korea’s state media said Trump deserved the death penalty for insulting the country’s leader Kim Jung-un.

Trump and Kim have been engaged in an escalating war of words over the past months, trading personal insults and threats of military strikes.

Towards the end of his Asian tour, Trump traded barbs called the North Korean leader “short and fat” after being called “old” by North Korea’s foreign ministry.

Trump stirred more controversy a few months back by deriding Kim as “rocket man,” a move that experts said was unbecoming of a president.
