Ten sailors are missing and five have been injured after the US Navy warship USS John McCain collided with an oil tanker in waters east of Singapore and the Straits of Malacca.

The US Navy’s 7th Fleet said the USS John McCain sustained damage on its port side after hitting the Alnic MC.

Singaporean ships, helicopters and tug boats, as well as US Navy aircraft, have joined the search for the missing sailors.

The warship, which had been making a routine visit to Singapore, was heading back to port under its own power, the navy said.

The waterways around Singapore are some of the busiest and most important in the world, carrying around a quarter of the world’s trade in goods and oil.

It is the second collision involving a 7th Fleet warship in the past two months.
