A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck off North Korea in the Sea of Japan at 7:48 PM UTC (12:48 AM PST on Thursday), the US Geological Survey said.

The quake was very deep, 560 kilometres below the seabed, and unlikely to cause any damage. Its epicentre was 201 kilometres south-east of the North Korean city of Chongjin.

In addition, a Pentagon spokesperson talking in the context of this earthquake said initial indications, based on the depth and location, show it was not a consequence of a nuclear test.
