  • Canadian PM in tearful reunion with Syrian refugee

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was reduced to tears after being reunited with a Syrian refugee one year after welcoming the man and his family to their new country.

Video capturing the meeting last week between Mr Trudeau and Vanig Garabedian has gone viral with nearly 3 million views.

Both men were part of a group gathered at a Toronto restaurant to mark the first year of Canada’s program for Syrian refugees.

Mr Garbedian recalled to the CBC News station how last December he arrived in Toronto from Beirut.

“The very first person we shook hands was the prime minister,” prompting Mr Trudeau to grab a napkin off the table and wipe his eyes.

But the youthful prime minister could only momentarily stop his flood of tears.

When Mr Garbedian described how the Canadian leader told him on his arrival “Welcome home”, Mr Trudeau’s eyes continued to water.

Mr Garabedian said arriving in Canada not only meant that he and his family were safe, it also meant they had taken on "the responsibility of joining the Canadian family”.

When asked by a CBC News journalist why he wanted to greet the planeload of refugees last year, Mr Trudeau replied: "I felt that being there in the name of all Canadians to welcome people was really important."

The Canadian government resettled more than 25,000 Syrian refugees between November 2015 and February 2016.
