Apple has reportedly decided to favour Face ID or facial recognition over its Touch ID or fingerprint recognition, according to reports circulating over the internet.

MacRumors article quoted KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo telling that facial recognition in iPhones hold competitive advantage over other smartphones that run on Android OS. The latest Apple iPhone X uses modern Face ID feature which is yet to be matched by Android smartphones. The camera and software ability of Face ID feature are exclusive features of iPhone X – which has been released recently.

It was reported that iPhone models will slowly abandon Touch ID which is the more widely used security feature in Apple smartphones. Kuo believes that Face ID, augmented reality, 3D technology and TrueDepth Camera have been appreciated by the iOS users.

Apple has considered several changes for the upcoming iPhone models in 2018, including minimum bezels and favouring Face ID over Touch ID. The company has planned to improve the sensors and design. With the passage of time, fingerprint sensors or biometric authentication may become less popular in view of thriving facial recognition technology.

There has been no confirmation from Apple about whether the company will abandon Touch ID in 2018. It was told that Face ID may be combined with biometric verification to strengthen security of the phones.

Kuo told that Android smartphone manufacturers are already working their own facial recognition technology and trying to improve it to match the Face ID offered by iPhone X. 3D sensing techniques will also remain a focus point for Apple’s competitors including Samsung, Huawei and OPPO.
