Samsung today unveiled its new flagship tablet, the Galaxy Tab S2, in Dubai, labelling it the thinnest and lightest on the market.

The Tab S2 measures just 5.6mm and weighs 389g for the 9.7 inch version. This makes it considerably more streamlined its main rival in the premium tablet segment, the Apple iPad Air 2, which is 6.1mm thick and weighs 437g. The world’s thinnest tablet was previously the Dell Venue 8 at 6mm.

The Tab S2 features a newly optimised Super Amoled display (2048x1536 resolution) which Samsung said delivers 94 per cent natural tones and has a reading mode that helps to protect users delving into content for long periods of time.

The tablet comes with Microsoft Office Solutions preloaded, has a finger-print scanner and allows users to run two apps simultaneously.

It will be available in both 9.7 inch and 8.0 inch screens with Wi-fi and LTE, 32GB extendable to 128GB with MicroSD and will be priced from Dh1,599 for the smaller version, and Dh1,999 for the larger screen size.

Both are expected to be available in the UAE by the middle of the month.

“Backed by an integrated office experience, the Galaxy Tab S2 will be a constant companion for a range of users who value high-quality finishing and cutting-edge innovation,” said Hayssam Yassine, Samsung head of IT and mobile team.

The likes of Samsung and Apple have come under increasing pressure in the tablet sector as low-cost brands have flooded the market and bigger smartphones have become more popular.
