Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Sunday at the request of Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah inaugurated Jahangir Park located in Saddar area.
The chief minister while presiding over a meeting earlier said that he wanted to restore Jahangir Park as it would otherwise be encroached by street hawkers and turned into a dumping ground by fruit vendors.
CM Sindh had vowed to restore it to its past glory and frequently visited and eventually got it completed within six months. The scheme was completed at a cost of Rs 200 million.
The park is spread over 5-acres with a amphitheater, bird’s aviary, dinosaur park and even a library. It has a two reverse osmosis (RO) plants each one with capacity of 50 MGD. One RO plant is for drinking purposes to be used by visitors and nearby residents, while another is only to water the lawn, plants and flowers.
The park has its own security system under which CCTV cameras have been installed with a command and control centre which would also cover the vicinity around the park.
The park is now open for public from Sunday evening. It would be free for all for two weeks and then the administration would fix nominal charges for visitors. The Sindh government would maintain the park for next two years.

It may be noted that the land where Jahangir Park stands was donated by Khan Bahadur Behramjee Jahangir Raj Kotwala in early 1880s. A park was established and named Behramjee Bagh which was inaugurated on the eve of Nauroze in 1883, and was later renamed as Jahangir Park.
CM Sindh said that with the inauguration of Jahangir Park the soul of late Behramjee Jahangir would be satisfied, and it now our responsibility to take care of the park and maintain its beauty and restored glory.
He said that Saddar is heart of Karachi and Jahangir Park is heat of Saddar. “We have restored palpitation of heart and now with the start of restoration of old areas entire Saddar area would give new a look,” he vowed.
