Former President and PPP Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari on Sunday dispelled the impression that his party had weakened in Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.

His comments came a day after PPP came under criticism from observers and media commentators over party’s dismal performance in the cantonment elections held across Pakistan on Saturday.

Addressing a large gathering of supporters at Lyari on Sunday, Zardari said that PPP was still popular across the country and that results would be seen in the next elections.

“Benazir Bhutto once played the role of opposition with just 15 members and then formed the government in next elections,” he recalled.

“We have kickstarted our campaign for the next general elections from Lyari as two and a half years have already passed,” he said. “We will hold public meetings in Kashmir, Gilgit Baltistan, South Punjab, Multan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Lahore,” he said.

Welcoming the Chinese investment, he said that PPP would not let it fall victim to internal politics. He said that as President he had visited 10 Chinese provinces to lure investment for Pakistan.

The former president warned India not to disturb Kashmir, saying that Muslims of sub content would rise against injustice in Kashmir.

Zardari said that he would lead the party for the time being before handing it over to Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Assefa Bhutto Zardari.

Calling Lyari as PPP’s fort, he announced a package of Rs1 billion for the development of restive town. The Sindh government will also set up Bilawal Bhutto Engineering College in Lyari, he announced.
