Seventh meeting of parliamentary parties convened on Friday has concluded in vain as the leaders could not strike a consensus over extension of military courts.
Representative of Pakistan People’s Party, Naveed Qamar has said that the government has agreed to cut short three-year extension proposal to two years however, the political organisation would consult top leadership over the development.
PPP participated in the meeting today after it called off the boycott announced earlier.
Reportedly, a draft of the proposal presented today in the meeting that was presided over by Speaker, Ayaz Sadiq still had words ‘religious and sectarian terrorism’ deleted in it.
PPP has not budged from its demand of calling an All Parties Conference over the outstanding issue.
Military courts were established early 2015 after a terror attack on Army Public School in December 2014 claimed over 140 lives, mostly children.
The government sought approval of all parliamentary parties to amend the Constitution of Pakistan and pave way for establishment of army courts for speedy trials of terrorists.
However, tenure of the courts expired by the end of 2016 and since then the government is in talks with different political organisations to have the tenure extended.
