Former president Pervez Musharraf’s lawyer on Friday called for a joint trial of all those civil and military leaders who were part of the setup when emergency was imposed in the country on November 3, 2007.
A special court in Islamabad is hearing a treason case against the former military ruler who is accused of abrogating the Constitution and taking other emergency measures. Musharraf’s lawyer, Farogh Nasim, argued before a three-judge bench, headed by Justice Faisal Arab, that imposing emergency was a collective action taken in consultation with then civil and military leaders. “No one person can be held responsible for the November 3 emergency; targeting Musharraf alone is wrong,” he added. The court has reached a decision on this request and will announce it on November 21.
