Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said Wednesday that 180 million people of the country have elected him as the prime minister and that he could not resign at the behest of only 5,000 protestors.

He was addressing a ceremony in Attock on the occasion of inaugurating an oil well being managed by Oil and Gas Development Company Ltd.

“Unfortunately some elements are hindering country’s progress. They are responsible for this situation,” he said, referring to PTI and PAT sit-in in Islamabad.

About allegations of rigging in last year’s general elections, the PM said caretaker chief ministers did not support the PML-N.

“We were not in power when elections took place, how could we be blamed for rigging, PML-N had no caretaker CM in any province,” he said.

He said his government intends to finish power outages over the next three or four years.

“For Pakistan to progress economically, there has to be an end to load-shedding…it is Pakistan’s biggest problem which which we are focusing on,” PM Sharif said.

He said Chinese president and Pakistan were to sign agreements in energy and other sectors; but political uncertainty forced him to postpone the scheduled visit.
