Islamabad: The opposition in the National Assembly on Tuesday warned it would strongly protest against any direct or indirect military intervention against Syria.
“No troops should be sent to Syria either directly or indirectly,” Leader of the Opposition Syed Khursheed Shah said after opposition parties’ meeting on Tuesday.
He said there were reports that the government was considering sending retired army officers to Syria. “The opposition will protest against any such move,” he warned.
The opposition parties expressed their concern over the $1.5 billion aid given to Pakistan by Saudi Arabia. “We do not oppose the aid but Pakistan should not indulge in others affairs,” the meeting noted.
The government, including Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, has clarified that it has not changed its foreign policy on Syria. But the $1.5 billion aid has made the opposition suspicious, which seemingly is not ready to believe the government.
The issue of major shift in foreign policy was also raised during the last NA session and Adviser to Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz had to make a statement regarding the government policy of non-interference.
However, on Tuesday, at the second sitting of the 10th NA session, opposition parties once again met and discussed their fears about the same issue.
The meeting also discussed $1.5 billion aid, ongoing peace talks and attack on the Islamabad district courts.
The meeting also discussed the fact that PM had never been to senate after taking oath. “If the PM cannot attend senate session, then a joint session of the parliament should be convened,” Khursheed Shah suggested in a satirical tone.
