Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar has taken notice of the killing of a traffic police officer who was run over by Balochistan Assembly member Abdul Majeed Khan Achakzai’s speeding vehicle in broad daylight on June 20.

The CJP also asked Inspector General of Police (IGP) Balochistan Ahsan Mehboob to submit a report within three days and directed DPO Dera Ghazi Khan to ensure that the victim’s family receives no pressure or threats during the investigation.

The vehicle of Pashtoonkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP) legislator and Chairman Public Accounts Committee Abdul Majeed Khan Achakzai hit Haji Attaullah Dashti when he was performing traffic duties at GPO Roundabout in Quetta last week. A cyclist, Abdul Ghafoor Baloch was also injured by Achakzai’s vehicle.

The seriously injured traffic police sergeant was taken to Civil Hospital but Dashti succumbed to his injuries.

A police team, headed by a senior officer, went to the residence of PkMAP legislator on June 24 and took him into its custody. Earlier, the Civil Lines police had registered a case against unknown persons despite having the footage of the incident captured by closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras installed at the GPO Roundabout as well as the eyewitness account that Achakzai was present in the vehicle when it ran over the traffic sergeant.

A case was registered against the MPA after IGP Balochistan and other senior police officials also took notice of the tragic incident.

Police produced Achakzai before the court of judicial magistrate Quetta Shahnawaz Langove tight security, who remanded the accused in police custody for five days.

Achakzai has already admitted that he was driving his official vehicle when the accident took place. He has said to settle the issue by paying compensation to the victim’s family as well as the injured passerby.

The PkMAP legislator, who was elected to the Balochistan Assembly in 2013 elections from PB-13 Qila Abdullah, also intended to leave for Dera Ghazi Khan along with tribal elders to meet the family of Dashti.
