There were fewer labor strikes in Dubai during 2013, but govt. figures show more workers participated in protests in the Gulf emirate, where trade unions are banned.
The number of strikes fell by almost 25 percent to 34 in 2013, down from 45 the previous year, according to figures quoted by The National.
A total of 25,788 workers were involved in industrial action, compared with 21,600 in 2012, according to a National Committee to Combat Human Trafficking report quoted by the newspaper.
Delayed payments and demands for higher wages were cited as two common reasons for disputes.
In May 2013, thousands of workers employed by Dubai’s largest construction firm, Arabtec, went on strike over wage demands.
Hundreds of its workers were sent home following the strike. The company later announced it had raised the salaries of 36,000 employees, The National reported.
